The Omega 3 Secret

By David Morris

Omega-3 oils, which have been somewhat of a buzz-word the last few years, do in fact appear to improve health and survival in those with heart disease. Omega-3 fats have also been found to ward off heart disease in the first place. Researchers aren't exactly sure how and why omega-3s protect your heart, but a new study does provide some clues to this mystery.

Reversing a cell's age

In an attempt to understand the connection between omega-3 and a healthy heat, researchers looked at 'telomere' length, and yes, telomeres is a new word to me too! Telomeres cover the ends of DNA, they're similar to the plastic ends on shoelaces that prevent them from unraveling.

Researchers have found that the length of a telomere is one way to measure the age of cell. This is because, as the cell ages the telomere shrink, they become shorter. So the shorter the length of the telomere the older the cell is. And when the telomere shrinks so much that it can no longer protect the ends of the DNA from damage, the cell enters into a 'resting phase' or simply dies, it's then replaced by a new cell.

Omega 3 oils means younger cells?

This study took 608 people with a heart condition that was stable. The researchers simply measured the telomere length of the white blood cells for each of the study participants, once at the start of the study and then again and the end, which was five years later. The researchers also noted the levels omega-3 fats in the blood too.

The results of the study found that the subjects with the highest omega-3 fat levels at the start of the study had the slowest rate of telomere shortening over the five years. Whereas the telomere of the subjects with low levels of omega-3 oils, became shorter much more quickly.

The study indicates that omega-3 fats may protect cells from ageing, and this could well be one reason why omega-3s help keep the heart healthy, even if there is heart disease to begin with, but more research still needed in this area.

Are you getting enough omega-3?

Omega-3 fats could also lower the risks of other chronic conditions including cancer.

Good sources of omega-3 oils include spirulina, chia seeds, wheatgrass Powder, walnuts, olive oil, and linseeds. It's easy to make small changes to your diet to include these foods, so you can make sure you're getting enough Omega-3.
