There used to be little doctors could do to treat Mesothelioma patients, but now those who suffer from the rare lung cancer have been given hope that a new wonder surgery can add years to their life expectancy. The treatment is being pioneered in the US by a team of thoracic surgeons.

The prognosis for sufferers is just 6 months life expectancy if they don't receive treatment. If the patient is fit and healthy and the disease is caught in its early stages, however, Dr Daniel uses trimodality therapy. In addition to the usual chemotherapy and radiation, he performs a challenging surgery called extrapleural pneumonectomy.
Though they will not be cured they will be given vital extra time and an improved quality of life. An extrapleural pneumonectomy involves removing the organs within the chest cavity and ensuring that all tumours are removed before placing vital organs back inside a reconstructed diaphragm. The treatment has already been successful on a number of people in America.
